We did a 6 layer rainbow layer cake with a white buttercream sparkle exterior. So it looked like a boring old white cake at first, but alas when cut into a festive array of prismy awesomeness! Narrating life...

I can't remember the last time I paused to let every piece of data entering my brain to wash over my cognitive mind, like savoring a taste, realizing it is sweet, or salty, it's texture. I followed my thoughts as they came to me. Telling myself what I was seeing exactly and processing each sensory experience. I was pouring creamer into my coffee, I was stirring it in, clockwise, my hand was gripping the spoon, my brain was communicating to my hand to hold the spoon and stir it in a clockwise motion. It was swirling together, the colors blending together, actually focusing my eyes on the liquid in my glass, rather than just zoning out and going through the motions of things on auto pilot.

Not thinking of of something off in the distance, a worry that I could do nothing about at that time, a looming job interview, a conversation with a friend, the breakfast that I still hadn't made at 11:30am. But right there, I truly stopped to live in the moment. I broke that moment down to molecules, and each bit of it I tasted. It's amazing how much of our time we go about life taking for granted all of the ridiculously complex matter around us, and how amazing it all is. Like right now, I'm writing down a thought that I had, in my brain, this big glob of mush in my body that thinks things, (THINKS thoughts, oh God what does that even mean!?) and to by scratching liney shapes on a piece of flattened tree is able to store it here (my notebook) or share it with others who are educated in the code I am scratching in.

How could anyone in their right mind ever experience boredom.

If you live in the greater Los Angeles area you must go to the Bourgeois Pig coffee shop. It is "the tits."

Open till 2:30 am with free wifi and you feel like you are in a magical fairy land tree house nook. I know, it sounds too good to be true. I never noticed it tucked in next to UCB Theater and the newspaper stand until I wondered in there one night in search of gluten free food for my room mate before a UCB show.

They have big comfy vintage couches, dark lighting, great music, good coffee, and a back room that looks like something that would be in Hogwarts.

I highly recommend checking it out if you are in the Hollywood/Los Feliz area and like magical wonderful creative spots.

I find that children's books have some of the neatest art work in them. I was flipping through a some books illustrated by Mary Blair and didn't know whether I wanted to eat the pictures or hang them on my wall. They are like candy for your eyes!

A Very Hockney Pool Day

We had a very David Hockney style pool day last Sunday. We dined on a fancy spread of popsicles, melons, and chips while bathing in the sunshine. What a lovely afternoon in Los Angeles with friends.

I was out with lil Lucie the other morning for a stroll and we ... well I, got the sudden urge for a hot chocolate and decided to dip into Gelson's Market for a spot o coco. Gelson's bakery is a dangerous place. There are all sorts of things that should not be eaten by someone desiring to fit into those size 2 pants that have been collecting dust in the closet. Deciding to indulge myself, I went a' hunting for something delicious.

It was love at first sight.

There they were, sitting there behind the glass, the most wonderful concoction I'd ever beheld in my 23 years of life..... "The Muffin Top."*

Over and over again I had (like I'm sure most of you as well) suffered from having to eat a muffin in entirety. The boring fluffy part with that tastes like a cake and a piece of dry toast had a baby. The part that you feel obligated to eat because of starving children in Africa or wherever it was people starve, even thought you derive no enjoyment whatsoever from it. The part that you feel would evoke awkward snares and scoffs from those around you for only eating the top of the muffin. Yes, that part... that horrible part of the muffin.

Well thanks to the wonderful people of Gelson's bakery we no longer have to be afflicted with such agony. We can purchase what we truly want, what we truly need to be happy. The ever delicious, muffin top.

Now that's what I call America. Life, Liberty, and Muffin Tops.

*(not to be confused with the common slang "muffin-top." See example below.... shudder...)

Sun Sun Go Away, Come Again Another Day.

Here in LA there is this thing called June gloom. It seems to be causing all sorts of confusion with moods, appetites and wardrobe selection... well maybe I'm the only one.

I start my day with a nice serving of clouds and the grey drizzle that makes me feel like I am back in the depress pot that is Seattle. What do I wear? A scarf with thick tights and boots feels appropriate, or maybe a big sweater to cuddle in throughout the day? I will definitely need a heaping cup of coffee to get my blood pumping and keep me from drifting off into dream land while at work. Of course my music selection will be something a little dark and moody, maybe some Beach House or Bon Iver... maybe some Death Cab For Cutie or The Middle East...mm yes. This will put me in the right kind of wonderful melancholy mood of a grey drizzly day that is enjoyable every once in a while. Also my ambition meter for accomplishing things with my day will be set directly at "Under-achieve." Oh take me away grey gloom day and give me wonderful things like naps and socks!

But alas, the dupe that is Los Angeles June Gloom besets. I am going about my day sighing from the grey, perfectly comfortable, relaxed, looking forward to my plan of doing nothing but reading and watching movies all day, when the 1:00pm strike hits. A little patch of blue appears over the Hollywood Hills that I see out the window. Next thing I know, there are sun beams shooting in through every orifice of window, door or crevis without invitation. It is an all out sunshine freaking bonanza here.

What about my movie watching? Why did I wear this huge ass sweater and tights!? I'm suddenly hot and sweating from the combination of coffee and thickly woven cotton clothing. Now I actually have to accomplish something with my day... and I will feel guilty for not exercising... suddenly this dark Beach House song is a little creepy while there are birds chirping and dancing in sunbeams outside of the window. WWHHYY JUNE??!!

Why must you torture me and jerk me around? I just want some consistency. I just need to know that when you say you are going to do something you do it. Don't go tricking me and messing with my vibe I have going on. Is that too much to ask you atmospheric pressure/wind patterns/precipitation? Hhmm? I can't hear you.

I went for a stroll yesterday around the Beachwood Canyon area and got some sweet snaps. More to come later... after I charge my camera battery. They always seem to run out at the most inconvenient times or right before you're about to take an epic picture. (my fist is shaking in furry and frustration at you nikon camera battery!!) Enjoy.

I have been twittling my thumbs over a very important life decision this week. A decision that will either be a huge mistake, or will be a one of the coolest things I do this week. No, I'm not getting a tattoo, I'm not getting engaged, I'm not changing my career or even my hair color..... I'm (maybe) getting a kitten.....!!!!!

Do I want it destroying my furniture? Or have it crapping in a box somewhere in my smallish apartment? Or have to commit to feeding, shots, etc.

I am trying to be level-headed about this one, but I just can't help letting my cuddly-girly-fluffy side get the best of me when looking at these faces.... any advice?

My room mate was telling me about these feather extensions for your hair the other day and since then I have been seeing them everywhere I go! These are super rad. This is a great way to change it up for those of us who have long hair and get bored with it... but aren't too thrilled at the idea of chin lengthed bobs. They are pretty subtle and look sort of natural and very pretty. I also saw a lady the other day with tiny little metallic strands that looked awesome. I'm thinking I'm gonna go get my feather on!

I was listening to Morning Goes Eclectic on NPR last Sunday while driving to church and got turned onto a great new band called WILD NOTHING. Best LA Scrub Down.

This is what Aubrey looks like after 15 hrs of shooting a tv show in the Malibu sun.

Like every human being after a hard day I enjoy being scrubbed/sandpapered down head to toe by old Asian ladies in Korea town at 2am in the morning....

You might be thinking to yourself.... wha?

Well let me tell you about the Wilshire Spa and you will understand. Tucked under a high-rise in Korea town this 24 hour spa is the place to go if you are in need of some pampering anytime. Me and my room mates go around 11pm for a late night spa adventure. You strip down to your nothings and enjoy a: Massage, Facials, Body Scrub, Hot & Cold Baths, Dry & Steam Saunas, Mineral Salt Room, Charcoal Room, Pure Onyx Room, Lounge Area, Beauty Salon, Restaurant and more...
But, I most definitely recommend the Full Body Scrub ($50). It is da bomb. Yes... I said "da bomb." That's how good it is ... that I would resurrect the 90's slang relic for the mecca of coolness. So basically you are in the buff on a table getting your skin polished and scrubbed by an old lady in granny panties (not quite sure why, but whatever works) and washed with warm milk oil until your bod is baby soft and sparkly clean.

All you sheepish sissies and prudes... I don't care if you don't want anyone seeing your hoo-ha... Just do this. You will thank me later... hopefully fully clothed when you do.

(This post was written a little while ago...but I didn't post it yet.)

"Seeing as it is the Christmas season I decided to make my once a year pilgrimage to the Gehenna of the modern western world. The local mall.

This trip was made especially wretched by the fact that I was up the entire night before having my dinner evacuated by my guts thanks to the little puke bug that is going around. This was however, my last day to do some gift shopping before leaving Los Angeles for the arctic tundra that is known as Seattle.

I closed out the Hulu page on my computer that I had been parked at for an embarrassingly long amount of time, peeled my lifeless skeleton out of my warm bed, strapped on some shoes and set off for my journey.

The roof seemed to be the wisest area to park in, due to my delirium and my frequent habit of forgetting where I parked my car. Shuffling into the atrium like a Grandma with a bad hip replacement, I was assaulted with smells of chinese food (that had no doubt been warming under lights since I woke up this morning) strollers and leashes piloted by frazzled parents who should have seriously considered shopping online, and...the grand conspiracy perpetuated by lies told by society, grandparents, and tv.....Santa.

I was like Normandy.

I ducked out of range of swinging bags, dodged uncovered child sneezes, and battled with snooty unintelligible store employees who would get upset when being interrupted from their conversation with their gay guy pal at the women's clothing store with whom they were analyzing her last nights sexting rendezvous with [insert high school boy's name.]

It soon became clear that an escape route was needed. My bags filled mostly with items I bought for myself (sheepish laugh...) I navigated towards where I thought I had parked. Once again old lady shuffling through the sea of chaos when upon my ears the cochlea damaging level screams register.

To my left, was a magnificent scene unfolding of child completely recumbent on the storefront floor, complete with feet kicking, fists pounding in a fit. "I WAAAANNNTTT IIIIIITTTTT!!!" His passion and volume was quite impressive as he fervently contorted his face and body on his mission to open the will and wallet of his mother for that toy he "had to have or was going to SCREEEAAAMMM!" All the while attracting a huge crowd.

Then, in that moment of pandemonium and weird mall smells I stopped ...and a Grinch style smile curled up my grumpy face. I was most thoroughly enjoying the fact that that was not my child. That I could leave the mall and not have to take that hellion with me. And most of all, that this child was able to convey every emotion I was feeling at that moment but by the constraints of society and what is deemed appropriate behavior for an adult, could not express.

Or it was just the flu medicine kicking in and making me crackers. Who knows. All I know is I escaped with a smile on my face and a story to tell."

FAUXCHELLA SHORT

The last 2 years I have participated in a little festival called Fauxchella with some friends from Long Beach. We go off somewhere, make some kick ass music, perform it for each other, and eat and drink lots of good things. This past summer's was pretty awesome. The food was AMAZING. Our chef Jessica blew my mind with all the stuff she made that weekend. The woman makes her own sausage, marshmallows, icecream, brandy-bacon-banana-bread and roasted a whole pig. Every time I see a punk little kid with light up sneakers I burn with envy deep down to my unlighted toes. Ever since growing out of a size 13 youth in shoes, light up shoes seemed out of reach. The only options I seemed to find were light up stripper heals that had a slot to put in dollar bills... not so appealing.

I was browsing the internet last night and found these lovely things! At last someone has heard my cry for light up shoes. Thanks ladies of Rodarte. You rock my world.

A FLOWER FOR THE NEUROTIC LADY?

I walked to a coffee house this afternoon. Passed a young guy carrying flowers from the market. He had dark messy hair, a white v-neck and dark slim jeans. He was attractive. I started going down a rabbit hole of pondering on who the flowers were for; ......his live-in girlfriend,... who wasn't nearly as cool and laid back as him, who didn't even read books, and always hogged the covers. Oh God he smelled good as he walked by! Why was he bringing her flowers? "Those should have been for me," I told myself, getting dark and whiny because there was no one bringing me flowers on a Wednesday afternoon.

Resisting the urge to follow the scent, and the boy buying flowers for the girl he shout not be dating, I continued to the coffee house. I turned the corner and was greeted by a whole swarm of white roses (my favorite) growing around the building waiting for me. Then it hit me, I didn't need some messy haired bum-handsome guy to buy me flowers. The all-knowing, loving God of the universe made me flowers. Made them, so that I could see them while I walked and know that he wanted to bring me joy. I was also reminded that I was definitely that girl who wasn't deserving of getting flowers. But, I do get flowers, everyday, growing outside my building, on my walks to coffee houses and sometimes (on rare occassions) from messy haired handsome boys.

Journaling Tip.

The type of pen one uses when journaling is surprisingly crucial. If it is the kind of pen that sporadically runs out of ink, you will waste valuable "I'm on a roll" time retracing the words you have just written and consequently forget that funny/significant/brilliant thing you were going to write.

If the pen is writing too lightly you will have to press down too hard, creating tension in your hand that will most definitely travel up to your brain and make you write irritated thoughts. This will make you sound like a frumpy nag who sits around writing about all the things you don't like in this world and will depress your reader to the point of making them write down all the things they hate about the world they live in whilst doing so, pressing down to hard with their own pen.
Way to go light writing pen... Ruining the world.

The pen that is too generous with ink and leaves blobs on your paper is no good either. You're going about your business, writing down your hopes and dreams, while this pen is leaking wet blobs of ink all along your page, which could get on your unbeknownst finger and get transfered via "itch" to your face. Then, when the cute guy sitting in the hipster coffee shop you are writing in, looks at you and smiles, it won't be because he thinks your cute.

So choose your journaling pen wisely because it could possibly ruin the world we live in or scare away potential suitors.

I personally prefer those all blue pens that are really skinny and skinnier at the top and write wonderfully always...I can't think of the brand they are. Currently googling it rather unsuccessfully.................

.........Wow, that was surprisingly harder than I thought it would be, but thanks to walmart.com I have found them. Papermate White Brothers Ballpoint Stick Pens in Blue...NOT Black.
Blue is by far superior.

I need a new book to read. I've been working on To Kill A Mockingbird and am just finishing up Alice in Wonderland and am looking for a couple new books to read. I just plowed through Harry Potter 7 so I'm thinking I need something with a little bit more substance and more intellectually stimulating... although it was super awesome/fun to read. I'm starting up a book club too so if you have any recommendations for that...feel free to comment.

Sunburns and Sand.

Apparently LA just got the memo that is was August and decided to turn the heater on. The last week or two has actually felt like summer. It was so hot that my ice cream cone was melting faster than I could eat it... hence the distraught expression and the river of melted goop running down my arm.

Here are some sweet pics that my room mate Colette took whilst beaching it up last week. Since we are both fair skinned gingers we decided we should rock the SPF 50. (Cause that's what cool kids do.)

Exercise You Pudge!

My body hurts but feels great at the same time. I have been getting back into shape... very gradually getting back into shape. I figured I ease my way into it with some yoga. Well my friends turned me on to Yoga Co. in Santa Monica... and it was not exactly easy. The modern style studio which is tucked away on the Santa Monica promenade, sits there waiting to kick your butt and get you limber.

We've tried a few of the different classes they have to offer from relaxing yoga where they give you head rubs and lavender smelling oils to intense-sweat dripping off of nose-noodley legged power yoga classes where the guy next to you is doing ab curling hand stands from down-dog position without even breathing hard to show off how much more in shape he is than your flabby self. (inhale)

There are classes running all day of different sorts with different teachers and styles. Take a look at the schedule and pick which one suits you or try them all. The great thing about this studio is that it is donation only... you pay what you can afford. Which, being a poor slightly unemployed young person, I appreciate.

So do like I have done and go get your exercise!

While wondering around lost this afternoon with my roommate Colette, we discovered the coolest little place in Silver Lake. Even in the chaos of driving downtown, the chaos of Tribal Cafe dominated and beaconed us in. (And Colette really had to pee, so it worked out great!) The front of this hole in the wall cafe is covered in tribal (well duh) carved posts, overgrown jungle-like vegetation, and signs shouting out all the goodness they offer for your belly's needs.

I almost spontaneously combusted from having too many good choices... so I went with the grilled chicken pesto panini, with red peppers, basil leaves grilled onto the bread, mozzarella, and that purple cabbage stuff. Also they had some delish boba tea, I recommend the black tea boba. It tastes like a Thai Ice Tea but blended. I was hoping for the Taro, but sadly they were out :( .... there's always next time.

Colette chose an interesting and tasty soup made of a mushroom soy milk base, with kale, mexican zucchini, papitas (like pumpkin seeds), and sliced almonds. It sounds REAL weird, but it was mm mm mm good. (Sorry Campbell's...they win with 3 "mm's") Her beverage of choice... a coconut and apple smoothy with ginger. Again, odd combo, but tasty combo.

Also a cool thing about this spot is that there is "Echo Park hipster type" dj's spinning all the latest tracks that you are so lame for not already knowing about. They also do music shows and I believe art shows there. There is a good possibility that the art is of the hippie/hipster persuasion.

Check out the cafe, then mozey over next door to the "2 Bad! Vintage! Store" for some cool shopping. Bad! Vintage! Site. We left pregnant with what I'd say was a 5 month old food baby our belly's. Happy and satisfied, we will return to Tribal Cafe again soon.

Life has been crazy lately. Moving, traveling, a job change, hosting out of town visitors, and exploring Culver City has been quite time consuming this past month. But, in amongst the chaos there is the nagging desire and need for decorating. I can not bare to live somewhere that doesn't please my eyes aesthetically. My new apartment walls are naked! They are even the color of naked. (How scandalous!)

I have been foraging the internet, the blogs, and the photog's sites for some great art to clothe my walls with. I even went to the Getty... but I'm pretty sure the stuff there was out of my price range.

OH MY GOSH! One of the surfboards on my balcony just fell over and hit the window... I thought for a second someone had jumped off the building onto our balcony! Uuugh, its too early for this crap.

Anyways, so I have been coming across a lot of really great photographers and artist during my search. Here are some of my favorite shots, and I recommend checking out more of their work. I also recommend securing large objects to something when they are on a frequently windy balcony.

Fashion Show, Fashion Show, FASHION SHOW AT LUNCH!

Last Friday we attended the CAL State Long Beach student fashion show. Miss Emilie was one of the hostess' and planners of the event. There were some pretty crazy outfits, (thigh stur-ups?) and also some pretty sweet stuff. Way to go fashion school! We also met the ladies from the super rad fashion blog GoFugYourself. I highly recommend giving it a gander. These chicks are sharp, witty, and say all the things you want to but shouldn't. Jessica and Heather, I salute you.

Apparently I was suppose to be sitting on stage on the judges couches...but opted for a seat where I could slouch and it wouldn't be seen by hundreds of people. After some much needed beers, me and my pal Natasha, a designer from Chip and Pepper, sat in the VIP and had our own judging going... fabric choices were our main qualm for the evening. So important people!

So apparently Pepper is a superstar so he needs to have his sunglasses on all the time. ha ha

A good time was had by all... except for my super cute bright flashy blue suede peep toe pumps that Pepper dropped a big glob of food on at the after event dinner...may they rest in peace.

Paper People Pool Party (say that 5 times fast)

Last Saturday was the Paper Magazine Beatiful People Issue Party. You would be right in guessing that it took a good portion of my afternoon to figure out what to wear. I settled on a pair of Rockstar Biker Jeans, Express studded Blazer and some sky high Micheal Kors oxford boots. I was originally planning on have a good old fashion night in since I have been battling a cold for the past week....but I'm never one to turn down a good party. So I strapped on my tallest shoes and headed over to the Sunset strip with my pal John. (These fierce heels proved to be a bad idea by the end of night since they ended up getting a lot of miles on them.)

The party was at the Standard in Hollywood which was pretty cool, except for the glass display case with people in it...zoo style. What was up with that?

There were many a pretty faces to be seen, and even prettier clothes. Yes, that is a fanny pack you see in the pic above....you can bring it back Algo! We tried to get the dancing going but there were no bites. So we shmuzed and chatted and drank the best margaritas I have ever had.

The night ended with this guy "accidentally" getting pushed into the pool in his red and white heart boxers and running around with them half way down his tush. um,...beautiful.

Where's Waldo!! Can you find us? My feet suffered through the night but fun was had regardless. I also made off with an innertube...which will be going to the beach with me shortly. Anyone know how to surf with a plastic innertube?

I was driving home the other day, stuck in the mess of I-5 at 5:30 and I plugged my ipod in to listen to some jams. I shuffle through and landed on a Bob Dylan song, and couldn't help but feel cool and superior cause I was listening to a golden oldie. It seems like that is the thing to do these days; latching on to past generations creative ideas. We are all about the remakes, whether it is movies, music, or fashion trends. It's like the more old culture you are into the better.

Now I am not trashing old music. I love it. I own it. I listen to it. I'm just a little curious why our generation is lacking in inventive energy to come up with a new sound. The 50's was the birth of rock, the 60's had their psychedelic hippie grooves, the 70's blessed the earth with the creation of disco, the 80's was the era of synthesized sounds and glam rock, the 90's had grunge and hip hop.....and the 2000's um, pop boybands? It seems that we have gotten lost in the last few years. Is it because we don't have an easily identifiable decade? (Um, the "O 10's", the "10zeeze", the "Tens?") We just don't know what to do with ourselves and keep recycling old material. Where is the new sound?

...And please don't say Lady Gaga is the best we can do.

We ran out of time for a shoot for Heart & Crowns the other day. So in a desperate attempt to not get yelled at I slipped on the "lovely" jeggings and had Emilie shoot me in them. I wonder if they will notice the glowing white belly in amoungst the sea of spray tanned models in their photos. They wanted some "arty" shots so I thought it would be a good idea to get on my back and hold my legs and torso up in the air....this only resulted in really bad photos, all the blood rushing to my head and falling.

FAIL.

As technology treks on at break neck speeds, our forms of communication have been changing drastically these days. Phones, Facebook, E-mail, Twitter, Text messaging, and now Chatroulette (which by the way is super creepy and you're guarantied to see some things you do not want to see. shudder...) For those of you who haven't experienced Chatroulette, it is a site where you log on and are randomly put into a video chat with random strangers. Now I'd heard some interesting stories about it from friends so I thought I'd give it a whirl.... needless to say there was some surprise penis. (Sorry you had to see that Athena) :/

Anyways so communication is changing. But is it always a good idea to move forward and not bring along the classic forms of communication? I am talking about writing letters. The age old practice that has lasted for thousands of years and up until about 15 years ago was pretty popular. It's like letter writing was the friend that we had all throughout grade school who was a little awkward but ultimately pretty cool, but when we started jr. high and there are all the popular kids to go join, and the cool sort of awkward friend gets left behind. I'm hoping that things turn out like the ending of the Breakfast Club or with "The Promise" by When in Rome playing at the end of the story. Where letter writing makes a triumphant come back and we realize that we have all been missing out this whole time.

When I first moved to LA I had a lot of free time, and a lot of people that I missed. I also had a bunch of stamps from mailing out college apps and from paying off all my newly acquired parking tickets. So I got into letter writing. It's actually pretty fun to write a fun note and send it off to it's unexpecting owner. You can do all sorts of things, write long notes, short nots, notes filled to capacity with loose glitter. (mmuahaha)

It is the best when you receive a rad letter in the mail! What a nice way to break up the monotony of bills and pizza hut coupons. So if you have about 15-20 minutes to spare, write someone a letter and make their day. I know all you college kids have that stationary your mommy bought you....

It only costs $ 0.44, and its something vintage, so it must be cool. (Said with large serving of sarcasm) I'm surprised Urban Outfitters hasn't tried to cash in on this already... clever little pre-handwritten quirky letters so that your friends think that you are actually the one with some creative spunk. It's only a matter of time.

And cards don't count. They are for the lazy or the uninspired.

Dirty Hair?

I just got back from a day of surfing followed by stuffing my belly full of home made hamburgers, beer, and milkshakes. I think my stomach is going into shock. I've heard somewhere that you aren't suppose to eat meals bigger than both of your fists. Well, I'm pretty sure I'm a couple fists worth over the limit.

It's a wonderful thing to feel at peace with the world. I'm not sure what it is, perhaps the shifting seasons of Winter to Spring has made things a little happier. I went for a walk this morning for a cup of coffee and muffin and couldn't help but be over-joyed to be right were I was, doing what I was doing, and be who I am. It's funny how things like green grass and blossoming white trees can make you feel good about life and grateful that you get to experience it. Or the old ladies who shuffle by on the sidewalk and instead of saying a normal "good morning" to you, they make a frazzled comment on how "there are so many dang cigarette butts out here!"

Another thing that feels good is having a clean house. Me and my room mates did some Spring cleaning today and let me tell you, our place is Martha Stewart standard clean. You can actually reach things on the shelves, we now know where "that smell" was coming from in the refrigerator, and my dead potted plants are no longer in permanent residency on the balcony. Yep, we done good.

Ugh I can't stop twirling my hair... I'm typing with one hand, and its taking soooo much longer. I love the way my hair & skin feels when I get done being in the ocean. All salty and wavy (hair wavy, not skin.) I'm sure there is all sorts of nastyness hanging out in there but it just feels right to be all salt watery and burned out from a hard days work in the waves. I'll have you know I did shower...only cause this is LA and I might get some sort of chemical spill on me and then I would start turning into a watery goo thing like that show Alex Mac.... um actually that would be cool. Maybe no shower next time.

*Sidenote... sometimes I will have a story to tell or something to say but can't really think of how to start it off gracefully. So sometimes they will just start out rather abruptly and without warning. Like word vomit. Yum. Example:

My apartment is right next to this cigar shop. (Horrible opening sentence.) The California air ever so smoggily wofts the scents from cigar smoke into my window ever to often. Now, I oddly like this smell even though it is commonly the signature scent of old men with mustaches. Men like this:

But while the lovely scent of cigar smoke drifts into my room, giving me a higher risk for lung cancer, another thing is accompanying it. The sweet tunes of the Rat Pack. The boys in the cigar shop have bought themselves a karaoke machine. So fairly often they will turn on the bbq parked at the front of the store, put the game on and sing at the top of their lungs to Frank and the rest of the gang. It's so cute hearing them jam out on the mic and shout at the tv when the football game is getting excited. I hope I'm like that when I get old. Minus the mustache.

I have been thinking of getting a tattoo. I'm not sure if I actually want one or if its just because I don't have one. Like it's some right of passage. Like I must fill my quota for permanent ink on my bod. I wanted to get the words "The Lord is my portion." on the inside of my palm...but apparently that is the worst place to get a tattoo. This is because it fades really fast and doesn't go on well on that part of the body. So I started doing some browsing online to find some new ideas and inspiration. All that I seemed to find was lots and lots of photos of things people put on their skin that they will or should regret someday. Here were my favorites for worst tattoos ever and a couple clever ones!

I believe it was a couple years ago when I for some reason was browsing around on myspace...(yes kids, remember that thing from back in the day!) and found a wonderful little band called Nico Vega. I usually am not on board with chick rock bands (example: the Veronica's, The Ting Tings, Veruca Salt, Avril Lavigne, the Donnas, Gossip, etc.) but the singer Aja Volkman is an animal! This girl can rip the tires of a car with her pipes. I seriously want to head bang, dance, and throw things around in my room whenever I listen to them. And for those of you who know me, you understand that this is not really normal behavior seeing as I'm an artsy fartsy hippy/fashion plate who doesn't wear a lot of black eye liner, converse or back comb my hair.

I see her getting compared to Karen O a lot, but as much as I love Karen O, Aja has a meatier voice. And one would definitely need some power to keep up with the bands, for lack of a better word, "rockin" songs. Most of the songs are pretty distinct from each other and are all great lyrically and instrumentally. I'd have to say my favorites are....

In my current city of Burbank we have a nice little collection of used book stores and Goodwills to scavenge through. This year I have been particularly satisfied with the bargains on VHS'. Who can beat $1 movies to own?! Now granted you do actually have to rewind them every time you watch them, adjust the tracking when it gets fuzzy, and the bulky cases do not make packing easy. Most of these are old movies from the 90's that I was old enough to know were cool but not old enough to watch. So now I can, for $1 feel like a rebel watching all of these forbidden fruit films at last.... (oh Hello PG-13, it's me Aubrey... I don't believe we've meet.)
I know it's shocking to hear that I still have a vhs player but its not as lame as it sounds (except for when I wait through the credits for all the special features that aren't going to be there.) These are some of the golden nuggets I dug up.

I'm so excited to be home! I get to see all of my friends and family and wear all of my coats that have been collecting dust in my 70 degree LA closet. It's so cold here! One thing especially that I am pumped about is all the good food I will be filling my gob with.

Since moving to Los Angeles in April I have been subject to a few of the different "scenes" it has to offer. I've hung out with surfers and gone to watch UFC fights at Barney's Beanery Bar with the boys in Santa Monica, I've visited some tasty dive taco stands and had beatnik parties on front lawns in Long Beach, and had a quaint cup of frozen yogurt and a stroll in the park in Burbank. But a particular sub-culture has ruffled my feathers and I must object to it. The Club Scene.

Let me break it down for you.
Prep Time:

Ladies, they spend hours searching shops for the perfect outfit that strategically shows the most skin possible, get the highest heels they can manage to walk in, and generally try and skankify as much as possible about their appearance. I'd say about 80% of these outfits are made of polyester and have some form of bedazzlements... whether it be lace, rhine stones or sequins. Exhibit A:

Guys; now this can vary sometimes depending on the level of self importance and douchiness. They spend the bulk of their time on getting their hair into these unnatural directions while using a whole bottle of product. Combine this with a spray tan, about a half a bottle of cologne (usually Abercrombie/Aqua Disio,) and an Ed Hardy/Affliction shirt that is a size too small. (This is because they think it creates the illusion of being more ripped. It does not.) I could not decide what picture to best illistrate my point so I must refer you to the bible of douchey club looking guys: "Hot Chicks With Douche Bags." Get your copy today!

You wait in line and are let in in order of hotness or whoever can bribe the bouncer with cash. Upon entering your ears are molested with damagingly loud house music that you notice as the night goes on does not really change to the next "song." Now that you have entered the hunting ground it is the females goal to go out on the dance floor and perform the ritual mating call of "bumping and grinding." A interested male will approach, usually from behind and with no warning and try to keep rhythm with her while hoping not to be shooed away. If both parties are satisfied with each others appearance then this dancing aka:sex with clothes on, will continue until one of them gets bored or they leave together to get busy. (In some cases this is done in the club bathroom, seeing as it is more convenient for both parties to rendezvous.)

No other place in our society would this kind of behavior be acceptable. If you see a hot guy in the line at the grocery store it is not your first instinct to go rub up against him to whatever Celine Dion song is playing in the store, and tell him he's "SO SEXY!" Why is this allowed to take place at night clubs? Anywhere else it would be considered assault!

It's time ladies and gentlemen of the age range 18-28 to put down the cologne and body glitter and meet people somewhere more respectable. Try coffee shops, art walks, work, church, concerts etc. I don't know just put some freaking clothes on and stop trying to hump strangers!

I have noticed a couple of really cool magazines springing up lately. It seems as though the lights of big shots like Vogue, Vanity Fair, and GQ are starting to burn out. All selling out to corporate sponsorship and featuring the highest bidder. What happen to fashion journalism?! No one cares about what is amazing or unique, or just quality interesting work. I have come across a couple a great publications that are doing more than just be a billboard to whore itself out to brands who want to make money...(inhale!) Check out these mags and subscribe, show some support before everyone goes out of business.

They just did a FIERCE (and I use that rarely and only when extremely appropriate) spread with Natalie Portman that was well...just FIERCE!!

Flaunt is a little more established but has very cool material. Lots of background stuff on people and very interesting covers. It's nice to see a break from the usual celebrity face and see some REAL ART! Check out the piece they did on Lykke Li

Purple Fashion Magazine

Now, Purple... although it's pages are heavily filled with fashion/boob photos, it does have a very cool collection of work. It's like the underground fashion and culture scene decided to make a magazine just for themselves so they could write about their friends. And little do they know it is accessible to mere commoners like you and me. Vincent Gallo posed for the cover in some hot looks from Balenciaga. He is a funny dude.

While out for a late night trip to the brand new Yogurtland that has just planted itself in downtown Burbank (woohoo!!) , me and a friend stopped by the also new Wastland vintage store (woohoo!!) to see what they had. I just happen to flip through a rack of t-shirts and what did I see? Why a fantastic shirt with my name!....well sort of. "AUBERRY" is close enough I guess.

It seems I have always been forced to put up with people spelling and saying my name wrong. I've been called Audrey more times than I can remember, Auburn, Onry, Ashley, Amy, and Auber by some. Well I found this shirt kind of comical since it is a reminder of how often people get my name wrong.

The next morning, on my Starbucks run (while wearing my shirt, and after giving them my credit card with my name printed on it) they went for neither obvious option for spelling.
Point proven.

Since I moved to Los Angeles from Seattle in April, I have noticed many differences in the cultures of the two places. Each has it's ups and downs, and each has its quirks. Here are a few things I have seen and experienced since my migration south.

Fashion) While Seattle tries as hard as it can to look unfashionable, as to make a purposeful statement that they are far too advance and intellectual to care about something so trivial as attire...Los Angeles tries to go above and beyond everyone else by creating over the top style and what some would call "fashion on crack."

Seattle: Los Angeles:

Favorite Snacks) Seattle is known for its great coffee and cozy coffee shops, unfortunately in LA those don't seem exist...anywhere. Where coffee shops spring up like weeds in the Northwest, the frozen yogurt place is king down here. Delicious...but not quite the same vibe. Sinking into a big comfy couch with a good book and a...tub of frozen yogurt just doesn't cut it. But on a hot day in the valley it can be your salvation!

Los Angeles: Seattle:

Literature) In the land of sunshine and surf, reading doesn't seem to be a very popular past time, unless you are standing in the line at Whole Food's reading about Lindsay Lohan or Kate Gossling in US Weekly. I miss second hand book stores and university people with thick glasses who think they are smarter than me.

Men) LA is a tricky city. There are so many good looking guys, but most of them and either taken, models, gay, gay models or famous and you will never get close enough to even steal a lock of their hair. There is however a community of gents who are quite radical... the surfers. While in Seattle, most of the men are Microsoft geeks or own their own website...aka pasty computer geeks. And the only thing they are surfing, is the web for pictures of Megan Fox.

Do you remember taking markers to your hair and coloring in highlights of blue, pink, and green when you were little? Or trying to dye your hair with cool-aid cause your mom wouldn't let you actually dye it. Well... I was flipping through the latest issue of Nylon and saw a wonderful photo of Juergen Teller's, for of course, Marc Jacobs . The model Edie Campell has some fantastic green streaks in her long wavy hair. Now normally this would look crappy and cheap, but done right it is totally rad and, I think, the next trend in hair. We are moving on from the pixie cut... to subtle rainbow bright do's. Jump on the band wagon! (but only those of you who can actually pull of this look...Mom, I'm pretty sure you don't qualify.)

Well t'is that time of the year for pumpkins, candy corn, and costumes! I am trying to figure out what to be. Here are my predictions for the most popular costumes...

All you need is a blonde wig, some foundation, and a black baby....oh and your D&G Belt... hello!

For a Chris Crocker costume you would need...a blonde wig...foundation, this sounds familiar. A bed sheet and a serious case of mental health problems will complete your look.

Black wig, HUGE lips, and a lot of pillows. Done.

If I have a nickel for every Michael Jackson costume we'll see on the 31st....I would be able to pay Michael Jackson's debt off...

Winken, Blinken, and Nod, one night sailed off in a wooden shoe;
